Lord of the Mountains I
Against a Backdrop of Tumultuous Events
Set in 18th-century France, this is the dramatic story of the fateful love between the young Christina and the wild Edmond – the black sheep of the de Braie family. For the girl’s father, Edmond is the embodiment of all evil, and he is willing to do anything to protect his daughter from him. However, he has no idea what a determined adversary he is fighting. Edmond is not stopped by snow-covered roads that cut his castle off from the outside world, nor by convent walls or hired assassins.
The complex family relationships are further complicated by the political situation. After the fall of the Bastille, the old world lies in ruins, and everyone must either adapt or flee…
About the Author, Hana Marie Körnerová
HANA MARIE KÖRNEROVÁ, born Hana Martinková (*16 February 1954 in Litoměřice), is a Czech writer. She wrote “for the drawer” from childhood; her first novel, Pán hor (Lord of the Mountains), was not published until 1993. This six-part saga, which maps the history of a French noble family, immediately won her a wide readership. Indeed, 18th and 19th-century France is the backdrop the author most often uses for her historical-adventure stories. She worked in healthcare for fifteen years and used her knowledge of the environment in her novel Prosím vás, sestřičko (Excuse Me, Nurse), with which she succeeded in one of the Book Club's first literary competitions. In addition to Pán hor, her best-known and most popular novel is Heřmánkové údolí (Chamomile Valley), a true story from post-war Czechoslovakia. The period thriller Andělská tvář (Angel Face) served as the basis for Zdeněk Troška's film of the same name. For the last fifteen years, the author has lived permanently in the Podkrkonoší region.
