Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in Ron Howard's film. The heroes are Joseph Donelly, a poor Irish peasant, and Shannon Christie, the daughter of a wealthy Irish landowner, who resented living as a rich English lady bound by hundreds of bans, orders and restrictions. Together, they came to America at the end of the last century to try, like hundreds of others, to get a piece of land of their own. But the rosy dreams of the promised land are quickly shattered by the harsh reality. The couple must live in squalid conditions and work hard to earn a living and travel to Oklahoma, where land can still be obtained. They experience brief moments of happiness and bitter losses, and even though they like each other, they still can't find their way to each other. And as if that weren't enough, Shannon is shot one winter night.
