My smart little girl
Charlotte's eight-year-old daughter Stella is an above-average, perhaps even genius, child. But Charlotte is disturbed and terrified by the sudden transformation of her personality. After the unexpected departure and death of their beloved nanny, Blanka, Stella suddenly has completely different tastes, hobbies, skills, and temperament. Her behaviour and appearance begin to bear a striking resemblance to Blanka, who was from Armenia—from the phrases she uses and her mistakes in English to the appearance of her hair, her handwriting, and a constant craving for stewed lamb, despite having been a vegetarian.
Charlotte, expecting her second child and exhausted by pregnancy and frequent nausea, is convinced that Blanka is somehow behind Stella's transformation. Has Stella been possessed? Or has Stella become her former nanny? Or is Blanka's spirit trying to settle something? The more Charlotte is consumed by the whole affair, the more convinced she becomes that only she can save her daughter. Even though it soon becomes clear that her husband considers all her suspicions to be a figment of her imagination.
This unique, chilling story explores the indistinct boundaries of diagnosis in children and the fundamental importance of maternal instincts. A thrilling, genuinely terrifying novel with a supernatural flavour in the style of Ira Levin, this ode to motherhood will have you gripped until its spectacular, surprising finale.
