Restless Coast
The audio book The Killing Shore – a crime thriller from the Faroe Islands. Written by Chris Ould, translated by Alžběta Lexová. Read by Aleš Procházka, directed by Miloš Vrána.
Faroe Islands Trilogy #1
DETECTIVE JAN REYNA RETURNS TO THE FAROE ISLANDS TO CONFRONT HIS PAST.
When Detective Jan Reyna left his native Faroe Islands as a child, he thought he would never see them again. Several decades later, however, he reluctantly returns to try and save his relationship with his father, who has suffered a stroke, and to come to terms with his own past.
The Faroe Islands are a long-foreign land to him, whose language he does not speak and whose customs he does not know, yet he finds himself caught up in a murder investigation. And not only that. The case seems to be connected to his father, which awakens many years of suppressed memories in Reyna. What's more, he has to face two half-brothers who are doing their utmost to protect the family's reputation.
Reyna faces a crucial decision – he can either persevere and risk learning something about his past that he didn't want to know, or he can leave the strange, windswept islands for good. Reyna's fateful decision will change the lives of all those close to him, but the secret he uncovers cannot be buried again…
CHRIS OULD
Chris Ould has had a number of jobs in his life, from ice-cream man to labourer, before publishing his first two novels, A Kind of Sleep and Road Lines, in the late 1980s.
He then spent many years working in television – as a screenwriter, he contributed to series such as Soldier, Soldier, Casualty, Hornblower and The Bill, for which he won a prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts award.
He returned to literature in 2012 with a pair of young adult detective novels, Knock Down and The Killing Street. However, it was three crime thrillers set in the Faroe Islands (The Killing Shore, The Killing Bay, The Fire Pit), featuring Detective Jan Reyna, that made him famous. Chris Ould lives with his wife and son in Dorset, where, among other things, he keeps sheep and tweets at @WriterChrisOuld.
