In the most magnificent house in Daretana, an imperial officer is found dead—apparently killed by a tree that sprouted from his body. Such a death is extremely unusual and terrifying, even on the borders of the Empire, where various plagues are rampant and leviathan blood causes strange magical changes.
The case is taken on by Ana Dolabra, an investigator famous not only for her cunning, but also for her eccentricity. It is said that she goes everywhere blindfolded and can even solve seemingly unsolvable mysteries without ever leaving her house.
She is assisted by a new assistant named Dinios Kol, whose magically enhanced memory makes him Ana's perfect partner. His superior's behaviour alternately scandalises, mystifies, and terribly infuriates him, but as he unravels the tangled case, Din witnesses her wit leap from one surprising deduction to the next, and he has to admit that Ana is truly the best investigator in the Empire.
When the two detectives uncover a plan that threatens the entire Empire, Din realises that he is far from solving the puzzle that is Ana Dolabra herself—and he begins to wonder how long he can hide his own secrets from her penetrating mind…

(b. 1984) is an award-winning American fantasy author. He was born in Louisiana and grew up in Texas; he currently lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and two sons. He became famous for his urban fantasy trilogy The Divine Cities, which consists of the novels City of Stairs (2014), City of Blades (2016), and City of Miracles (2017). He began his second fantasy series, The Founders Trilogy, with the novel Foundryside (2018), which was followed by Shorefall (2020) and Locklands (2022).
