Can the former head of Department Q help his former colleagues successfully solve a sinister case?
Carl retired to pursue his writing. He's left the police and his beloved Department Q and is finding himself again. But one day, he is contacted by a woman with a disturbing recording, and before Carl knows it, he's investigating. He meets Rose and Asad, who are struggling to keep Q alive after his and Gordon's departure, and struggling to come to terms with the arrival of a French colleague who harbours a dark secret.
A trio of favourite heroes take on the case like old times. On the audio recording, she hears the voice of a woman her husband tried to murder four years ago. The man subsequently took his own life and police have declared the case solved. However, a third voice appears on the recording, belonging to an unknown person, and everything indicates that the police have made a mistake.
After ten cases, the seriously ill Jussi Adler-Olsen symbolically hands over the reins to his colleagues Stine Bolther and Line Holm, who take over the popular Nordic crime series from him and successfully build on it. He therefore interfered only to a limited extent in the text of the eleventh novel, but he did participate in the invention of the plot.
–––
I've chosen two very talented writers: Line Holm and Stine Bolther to give the Q department a new perspective. I had a lot of wishes and expectations, but I have to say that both exceeded my expectations.
— Jussi Adler-Olsen on the novel Dead Souls Don't Sing
Jussi Adler-Olsen and his two new co-authors, Line Holm and Stine Bolther, have pleasantly surprised and brought an old successful series into a new era... The female traces are evident in the text and bring a fresh wind without the series losing its characteristic character.

The authors have taken on Denmark's most beloved criminal heritage. And they lived up to all expectations.
