Red Sonia - Shadow of the Vulture
The birth of the legendary warrior Red Sonja is one of the famous pop culture figures. She has appeared in films, comics and computer games. It was first introduced more than ninety years ago in Robert E. Howard's Shadow of the Vulture. And this work is now being published in the Czech Republic for the first time as an audiobook. Howard published the novel in 1934, at the very dawn of the fantasy genre. He set the story in the period of the Turkish campaign against Vienna. Sultan Suleiman sent his army to conquer Europe and the last bastion of resistance, the Habsburg capital, stood in his way. The Battle of Vienna entered the history books with the repulsion of the Ottoman armies, but who knows how it would have turned out - at least according to Howard - if the paladin Gottfried von Kalmbach and the mysterious red-haired warrior Red Sonya had not appeared among the defenders of the city. Red Sonia - Shadow of the Vulture is considered one of the first books in the fantasy genre called Sword & Sorcery. Robert E. Howard died shortly after publication, but his heroine fascinated readers so much that Red Sonja began to appear in other authors' stories. And Howard, along with his other hero, Conan the Barbarian, secured eternal fame among fantasy fans.
