Russia against modernity

Why contemporary Russia is in decline and turning to aggression

With a deep knowledge of Russian affairs, the author offers a penetrating analysis of the causes and course of the social, economic and political decline of contemporary Russia, which has resulted in aggression against Ukraine. He describes the country as a typical “petrostate” that has squandered the chance to use its mineral wealth for its own modernisation. He then explains the inability to embrace modernity as an attempt by the Kremlin to slow its spread even beyond the country's borders and to return the world to the power models of the past.
