Twenty-one-year-old Andrew, a graduate of a state college, doesn't want to live like this anymore. Since he doesn't hope to be one of the lucky ones sent by the winning lottery ticket to one of the newly terraformed planets, he chooses a different path: ...he gets recruited into the armed forces. The Earth world is not only divided into giant alliances, but also plagued by some kind of heavily armed social revolt every now and then, so there's always someone to fight. The army is attracting new recruits and Andrew sees it all clearly: he'll be lucky.
But if he finds the inhuman training and the ruthless way of elimination a good trade-off for real meat, clean barracks living and the affection of a girl named Halley, then he may soon change his mind. Andrew has a moment when he would put everything on the scales again and better, but it's too late. The contract for life is signed and he has no choice but to be swept away into the unknown depths of space...
