Nurtured by the Vltava, on whose bank he was conceived over a Saturday and Sunday. At the age of three, his desperate parents sold him to travelling Romani people, who returned him after just four days as completely unmanageable. Several official and semi-legal institutions then contributed to his upbringing. In some, he learned the laws; in others, how to circumvent them. Daniel Gris gradually acquired several wives of various nationalities and shapes and is the presumed father of a yet undetermined number of offspring. He likes nice cars and fast women, absinthe, and the atmosphere of smoky bars. He has tried his hand at nine trades in his life, and having resigned himself to poverty, he finally decided on a career as a writer.
