Retired Commissioner Asunander, who now lives in a retirement home on Gotland, unexpectedly takes on the investigation of an old unsolved case involving the strange disappearance of a certain Marlene Horwath. He asks his former colleagues, Barbarotti and Backman, for help, who soon discover that unravelling this tangle of mysteries after such a long time is an almost superhuman challenge. The case involves not only members of the widely branched Horwath family, but also secret codes and Jewish gold stolen by the Nazis during the Second World War. Fortunately, they can rely on their many years of police experience and their capable colleagues.
Håkan Nesser (Kumla, 1950) is one of the world's most popular Swedish authors. He divides his time between Stockholm and the island of Gotland. His detective stories are exceptionally successful, not only in his native Sweden. Some of them have been made into films. He can switch genres with elegance, but he has achieved his greatest success mainly with his series of crime stories starring Inspectors Van Veeteren and Gunnar Barbarotti. Håkan Nesser's books have been translated into more than 25 languages and have sold over 13 million copies. They are a guarantee of the best quality in the crime genre, but also of sleepless nights when you simply can't put the book down. His style is unmistakable. He has managed to create the extraordinarily vivid characters of Detective Van Veeteren and Inspector Barbarotti, who move in a precisely captured environment, inspired mainly by Swedish, Dutch, German and Polish settings.
Håkan Nesser used to be a full-time teacher; his first book was published in 1988 (the novel Koreografen), yet he continued to teach for another ten years before deciding to become a full-time writer. In 1993, the first story of Chief Inspector Van Veeteren from the town of Maardam was published. For the crime stories with the aforementioned hero, which have been published in more than 20 countries with 10 million copies sold, he has won a number of prestigious awards including the European Crime Fiction Star Award, the Swedish Crime Writers' Academy Prize (he is the only author to have won this prize three times so far), the Danish Rosenkrantz-prisen (he is the only author to have won this prize twice so far) and the Scandinavian Glass Key Award.
After nineteen years and ten books with Inspector Van Veeteren, Nesser published (2012) his first story introducing a new crime series – this time starring Inspector Gunnar Barbarotti living in the town of Kymlinge in southern Sweden. The Barbarotti series has sold 2 million books in 10 countries worldwide. Nesser's other very well-received works include: the novels A Summer with Kim Novak and The Shadows and The Rain, the philosophical thriller The Fly and The Eternity, the epistolary novel Dear Agnes! and a host of other works.
