Those cold eyes
The frost comes from the soul. A historical novel by the bestselling author of When You See the Sea.
War plays a cruel game of chess with people, the pawns get mixed up, the colour of the uniform doesn't matter so much. During the Nazi occupation of Smolensk, Neonila, a charming Russian girl, and Emil, a Czech youth forced to fight for the Wehrmacht, meet. When they settle together in Czechoslovakia after the war, the stigma of collaboration hovers over them and they are left with nothing but a cautious life of fear. Will they repress their past and be able to look at the world with anything other than cold eyes after what they've been through? And can fear justify cruelty committed against others? Scarlett Wilk comes up with her second novel, in which she once again opens up a sensitive and little-reflected topic of modern history.
