Murder on the golf course
"I'm worried. I have a kind of premonition - a kind of je ne sais quoi!"
Romantic Captain Hastings, this time enchanted by the Cinderella he met on the Calais Express on his journey home to London yesterday, sets off in haste back to France alongside the legendary Hercule Poirot. The reason is an urgent letter from a South American millionaire living in the French town of Merlinville, who fears for his life. However, instead of the owner, they are greeted by a police sergeant outside Genevieve's villa overlooking the sea with the announcement that Monsieur Renauld was murdered that morning. The deceased's body was found in an open grave with a stab wound in the back just a few metres from his property on a golf course under construction...
In the second Poirot story based on a true event, Arthur Hastings is again the narrator, who appears in only eight novels, compared to the series treatment.
"A beautiful demonstration of this, how to slaughter an audience with a little style." - Gregory Maguire, American novelist
"A remarkably good detective story, který lze vřele doporučit.“ – The New York Times
„Zápletka je opravdu chytrá.“ – Literary Review
„Páni, Poirot," I cried, "Have you seen the young goddess?"
Poirot raised his eyebrows.
"Cela commence!" he whispered to himself. "You have seen the goddess again!"
"Oh, dear, doesn't she look it?"
"Maybe, I didn't notice the fact."
"But surely you have noticed her?"
"Mon ami, two people rarely see the same thing. You, for example, have seen a goddess. I..." he hesitated.
"Yes?"
"I only saw a girl with anxious eyes," replied Poirot gravely. - excerpt from the book
