Sixteen days full of rain and snow, mud and pain, but also powerful and unforgettable experiences
Actress, presenter and endurance runner Lenka Vacvalová overcomes difficult terrain and herself on the 770 kilometres long route.
The Trail of the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising is the longest hiking trail in Slovakia and an experience of a lifetime.
It runs from Dukla Pass in the north-east of the country to Devín Castle at the other end of Slovakia.
Ultra running is challenging, long and exhausting. Sixteen days full of rain, snow, mud and pain, but also unimaginable experiences.
Lenka Vacvalová introduces readers to her personal story of overcoming fear, everyday challenges and the never-ending search for courage. And not just your own.
At the same time it maps the fate of heroes who died in the Slovak National Uprising. And the women who had to find incredible courage within themselves to help during the difficult period of the uprising.
„Time stopped there. The Dukla Pass became the scene of fierce fighting during the Second World War. The memory of these events is still very much alive here. The people commemorated by the monumental memorial here experienced the cruelties of war and only they and their loved ones knew how hard our freedom was fought for. In the cemetery under the 28-metre stone monument there are graves with the names of all 1,265 fallen warriors, among them women. There, somewhere at the end of Slovakia and at the beginning of the SNP Heroes' Route, in a place marked by blood and cruel history, that small moment suddenly seemed terribly big to me."
