The long-awaited landmark novel by Kateřina Tučková about women, faith and evil
Bílá Voda. A poetically named, desolate village hidden in the shadow of the border mountains, where crowds of pilgrims once came to ask the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary for help. It is here, several centuries later, that Lena Lagnerová arrives to hide from a past that has brought her to the brink of suicide. But instead of a convent with a large religious community, she finds only a few nuns, led by the distinctive Sister Evarista.
Evarista arrived in Bílá Voda on the last night of September 1950, when the communist regime, personified by the demonic Father Plojhar, dragged all the nuns to collection monasteries as part of Action Ř. The young Evarista was then given a choice: return to civilian life or share the fate of the others. She didn't hesitate for a moment. Like all the nuns, she was put to forced labour and subjected to humiliation in a communist prison and torture to make her renounce her faith in God. In vain.
However, Lena discovers that Evarista's dramatic story is only just beginning, and soon realises that the demons haunting the past of the Bílá Voda nuns have not disappeared, and are also part of her own destiny.
