Who wants to kill the Emperor

Murders in the Time of Emperor Rudolf II

Lukáš Trobl of Květnice, a clerk at the provincial court, happens to overhear a conversation between two unknown men in a remote tavern, The Mad Mare. He hears them say that “the emperor must be killed.” Lukáš isn’t sure if he was just drunk and dreaming, but he decides to inform his uncle, the court councillor Maxmilián Trobl, just in case. On his uncle's orders, he begins to search for the two strangers to find out if there really is an assassination plot against Rudolf II. He is aided in his investigation by Konrád, a one-eyed war veteran; Adriana, a Hungarian prostitute; and the court astronomer, Johannes Kepler. At first, it seems Lukáš merely overheard a drunken joke, but when he is almost killed himself and is only saved by Albrecht von Wallenstein, a captain in the imperial army, he realises the situation is serious. Especially when he can't even trust the imperial chamberlain, Philipp Lang, or the emperor's mistress, Kateřina Stradová. Could those two also have an interest in Rudolf's death?

Jan Bauer

With over 200 book titles to his name, Jan Bauer is the most prolific living Czech author. He has written some books under the pseudonyms Felix Krumlowský and Anna Březinová. He has also contributed to collective works, such as the ten-volume project 'Toulky minulostí světa' (Wanderings Through the World's Past). Originally trained as an agricultural engineer, he worked as a journalist for almost forty years. Since 2002, he has devoted himself exclusively to literature. He primarily writes non-fiction, detective stories, and historical novels, focusing mainly on Czech history. Recently, his two series of historical detective stories, featuring the former New Town magistrate Jakub Protiva of Protivec and Charles IV's secret agent, the Dominican monk Pavel, have gained considerable popularity among readers. For his work, he has been awarded prizes such as the Karel Hynek Mácha Award (1995), the Zeyer Cup (2007), and the prestigious South Bohemian literary award, the Petr Vok Goblet (2010). He lives in Vodňany, where in 2006 he founded the traditional annual writers' gathering, Zeyer's Vodňany.
