Bad Blood

The audiobook Bad Blood, by Dana Stabenow, translation by Hana Laryšová. Read by Lucie Juřičková, directed by Jan Bláha. Kate Shugak #14 KATE SHUGAK MUST CLEAR THE NAME OF A WOMAN SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON. Victoria Pilz Bannister Muravieff of Anchorage, Alaska, was convicted thirty-one years ago of murdering her seventeen-year-old son, William. No one doubted that she had set her own house on fire. That's why she is now serving a life sentence in a state prison. But her daughter, Charlotte, doesn't believe the official story, and when she finds out that her mother is in the final stages of cancer, she hires private investigator Kate Shugak to clear Victoria's name and get her released. However, the accused refuses to cooperate, and it soon emerges that she isn't the only one who wants to let the past lie. The deeper Kate delves into the case, the more she is terrified by a history full of secrets, sorrow, and murder, in which one of Alaska's most powerful families is also entangled... DANA STABENOW Dana Stabenow was born in 1952 in Anchorage, Alaska, and grew up on a fishing boat where, between bouts of seasickness, she wrote stories about “normal” children growing up on the mainland and forced her mother to read them. She studied journalism at the University of Alaska and then went on a four-month backpacking trip around Europe. Upon her return, she worked for Alyeska Pipeline and British Petroleum, and in her thirties, she decided she didn't want to spend her life at the mercy of oil tycoons and would rather become a poor writer. She promised herself she would publish her first book before she was completely broke, and she only just managed it. In 1991, her debut novel, Second Star, was published, and a year later, the first instalment of the popular Kate Shugak series, titled A Cold Day for Murder, which won an Edgar Award in 1993. LUCIE JUŘIČKOVÁ She comes from an artistic family and was born in Pilsen, where her father, František Juřička (1927), worked as a radio director. For his civic attitudes and active involvement in 1968, he was eventually persecuted and ended up a political prisoner during the Normalisation period. Lucie Juřičková's mother, Marie Grafnetterová (1933), was a long-time star of the operetta company at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Pilsen as an actress and singer. After graduating from the conservatory, she got her first engagement at the Jiří Wolker Theatre in Prague. She has worked in various Prague theatres. She is currently engaged at the National Theatre. In addition to theatre, she is mainly involved in voice acting. Her husband is the actor Martin Zahálka, who is also active in voice acting.
