William Hamley, founder of the world's most famous toy store, grew up in Cornwall, England. He could easily become a poor miner or a fisherman, as was common in the 18th century. Fortunately for all children and adults with children's dryness and playfulness did not happen. Ever since his childhood, William had one big wish and dream - to open the world's most sensational toy store! This childhood dream came true and in 1760 William Hamley opened the first Hamleys toy store in London.
In 1937 Hamleys became a phenomenon because William's love for toys went hand in hand with his desire to make children smile on their faces. His shop was soon full of the newest and funniest toys that children could only imagine at that time. The main thing that distinguished Hamleys from ordinary toy shops was that children could try toys here and not just watch. By the time Queen Victoria was on the British throne, Hamleys was a well-known term among the British.
The big blow for the toy industry was the year 1931 and the related Black Friday. The Hamleys world economic crisis, like many other businesses, has hardly affected. The shops stopped and the laughter in the toy store stopped. Hamleys had to stop horse-drawn carriages delivering more toys, and the toy store was closed for several years.
Fortunately for us, in 1938, William Hamley's original idea was taken over by London-based businessman Walter Lines, and on Regent Street he began to restore the faded glory of the world's most wonderful toy store. He was rewarded with a quick return of children's laughter and customers to his shop, as well as a lucrative contract. In 1938 Hamleys was officially named a toy supplier to the British Royal Family (which is still true today). And Hamleys is back! Walter Lines and his two brothers, Tri-ang Toys, were the largest toy manufacturer in the world in 1947.
The London Toy Building has survived another harsh period, the Second World War. In 1940, when it raged in Europe, the air battle of Britain took place directly over the rooftops of London's Hamleys. But the toy store survived five air attacks and bombing from the German Luftwaffe. William Hamley's glorious dream was not halted by the greatest war of the 20th century.
Over the years, the breathtaking world of entertainment has gained the world and has become a phenomenon. Today Hamleys operates more than 110 stores worldwide. Hamleys in the heart of Europe was opened in May 2016 in Na Příkopě Street in Prague, where it offers all visitors a unique concept of a giant toy store connected with an amusement park. Thousands of toys, lots of attractions and 4 floors full of fun. Its size makes it one of the largest toy stores in Europe. This is Hamleys in Prague - a dream that has come true!
