The Sparkly POOL tester is a must for proper pool water care when using conventional chlorine products. As a general rule of thumb, to achieve clean and permanently hygienic water, the active chlorine content should be kept between 0.3 and 0.6 mg/l. A pH value of 7.2-7.6 is generally recommended. In this range the greatest action of chlorine preparations without side effects is given. Chlorine content and pH value must be measured regularly (at least twice a week, more frequently at higher water temperatures). The tester is supplied in a plastic blister pack and contains reagents, crucibles, cards with laminated colour standards, instructions for use and technical information.

Determination of total (active) chlorine is the most basic check on the operation of public and family swimming pools. The use of DPD testers in the simplified version, where only free chlorine is determined, cannot be recommended as a matter of principle. Virtually all foreign DPD testers dispense only one reagent (tablet) for chlorine determination.
ISO 7393 lists the following forms of chlorine:
Total chlorine (active) = free chlorine + bound chlorine
Free chlorine is the chlorine that is normally dosed into the water. With the tester, it is possible to perform an orientation determination immediately after adding reagents without waiting (the reaction with bound chlorine is slow).
Bound chlorine is the part of chlorine that is labilely bound to nitrogenous substances in water, which are mainly introduced into water as components of sweat and urine from the human body. Bound chlorine remains active for disinfection purposes, but is harmful at higher concentrations (above 0.3 mg/l) - it is then advisable to "dilute" the pool water with clean water. Bound chlorine is not directly determinable, its content is calculated from the difference - total chlorine minus free chlorine.
Total (active) chlorine is the sum of free and bound chlorine. With the tester, it is determined by waiting 2 minutes after the addition of reagents to allow the bound chlorine to react.
Determining only free chlorine leads to overchlorination and to unhealthy water, where the operator "saves" the water and does not carry out partial water changes. In practice, there are known cases where the DPD tester showed a value of e.g. 0.1 mg/l chlorine (free), while the total active chlorine content was many times higher, often up to 2 mg/l. In water, for example. less than 2 mg/l of bound chlorine remained undetected, while Decree No. 238/2011 Coll. for public swimming pools requires not to exceed 0,3 mg/l.
If only one chlorine determination is to be made, it should be total chlorine for simplicity. If the chlorine content is kept within the normal range of 0.3-0.6 (- 0.9) mg/l and a portion of the water is changed regularly according to the pool load, an uncontrolled increase in bound chlorine will be prevented.
