A cat has nine lives

A rich, old merchant named Achov falls in love with a young girl and decides to marry her. However, she is in love with a timid young man who, by a twist of fate, is an employee of her elderly suitor. Needless to say, everything turns out well in the end, thanks mainly to a woman's cunning. With his dramatic work, comprising some fifty plays, Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky became a unique chronicler of the conditions prevailing in Russian society in the second half of the 19th century. The plots of Ostrovsky's plays often revolve around a lack of money among the main characters. The apparent realism of his comedies is frequently pushed into a slightly grotesque exaggeration, which is what makes his plays appealing even many years after they were written. Recorded in 1965.
