"We will never give up! Never! We are Czechs! ”
It is five minutes after 10:30 a.m. on May 27, 1942. Acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich is sitting in the front seat of an open Mercedes on his way to the office. Czechoslovak paratroopers wait on the sidewalk at a sharp turn in Prague's Libeň.
The film The Assassination reconstructs the preparations for the action, its execution, the cruel repression following Heydrich's death, the frantic search for the paratroopers, the discovery of their hiding place and their struggle, and finally their voluntary death. The film depicts the events with documentary accuracy, drawing on contemporary photographs from the Gestapo archives, testimonies of witnesses and many other materials to stage many of the scenes. The realistic result was also aided by filming in the places where the events actually took place. Compared to reality, the names of the protagonists have been changed: Instead of Kubiš, Gabčík, and Valčík, the film features Lieutenant Commander Král and Staff Sergeants Strnad and Vyskočil, which were their aliases, for which false identity documents were issued.
