"People come into the world for different reasons - by love, by accident, or by mistake. I was born for an apartment," the protagonist, Anežka, says at the beginning of the saga of the three women, which began to be written before the First World War. Anežka's fate reflects not only the life stories of her parents and grandparents, but also the cruel impact of historical events. Her grandmother, Anna, has gone to a border town in northern Bohemia, despite her parents' resistance, to start a new life with her chosen one - but it soon turns into a struggle for survival when Antonín is wounded at the front and Anna develops tuberculosis. A quarter of a century later, their daughter Elisabeth, forced to flee from the German army occupying the Sudetenland, also faces difficult beginnings. After another half-century, a dramatic intervention of fate - this time in the form of a StB officer - changes the life of the narrator Anežka...
