Days of our life

Miky has a secret: a family he can't show to anyone.

Miky is an ordinary boy growing up in a provincial town in modern-day Russia. When he was four, his mother died of cancer, and he was taken in by his uncle Slava, his mother's younger brother. Slava is a young artist living with his partner, a serious and strict doctor named Lev. In the current political climate in Russia, their relationship is taboo. To avoid attracting the attention of social services, the surrogate parents are forced to keep details about their family secret from the public. As Miky gradually grows up, he is troubled by first love, the search for his life's purpose and his own identity, and conflicts at school and with both his fathers.

The book offers a vivid and realistic picture of what a child might experience growing up in a loving and caring family, while at the same time being aware of the hostile atmosphere of the outside world and a society that does not accept their family model.

This is a magical, lively, very honest book which, alongside its other merits, does something extremely commendable: it normalises the view of homosexual families in our country.
— Galina Yuzefovich, Russian literary critic

It started with depression. I had been ill for several years and was trying to find a suitable treatment, but nothing was helping. Then it occurred to me to start a blog—so I could creatively process my personal feelings and problems. I didn't think it would cure me, I just felt like doing something. As the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky said: “I write so I don't have to think about it anymore.” That's how it was for me.

In 2013, a law was passed in Russia banning the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”. This law forces thousands of families to live with the constant risk of the state taking their children away from them, while at the same time making it almost impossible to provide any unbiased information to children and young people about LGBT+ issues. The book The Days of Our Lives is a figurative middle finger raised to this absurd law.
