This book-length interview with Cardinal Dominik Duka, conducted by historian Marek Šmíd, was created in the spring and summer of 2025 at the Archbishop's Palace in Hradčany. The completion of this unique text, which Father Dominik himself considered to be his “last word”, was unfortunately cut short by his death.
What the reader receives is an interview spanning the years 1943, when Dominik Duka was born, and 1990. We read a captivating narrative of difficult, or even harsher, times, but one delivered with composure, nobility, and understanding. And last but not least, with the astonishing erudition for which the former Archbishop of Prague was renowned.
Another part of the book consists of texts or personal recollections from a wide variety of figures, not only from church life. You will read how his person and significance are viewed by Catholic leaders, including Pope Leo XIV, archbishops, and bishops, as well as priests and members of religious orders from his circle. There are also further contributions from those in whose lives the Cardinal left a significant mark: presidents and other politicians, artists, and members of the armed forces, to whom he was close.
The conclusion includes key texts by Dominik Duka from the final period of his earthly life.
This extraordinary testimony of a man who is one of the greatest figures in our modern history is complemented by personal photographs from his archive.
With this book, Dominik Duka has said his “last word”, but his legacy endures. And for all who wish to learn more about him, this publication offers a unique and thoroughly authentic opportunity.
