The process of cellular miniaturisation was developed by Norwegian scientists as one of the cures for the planet's impending overpopulation. Small people eat less and take up less space, which makes sense. To ensure people join this programme in droves and with enthusiasm, it comes with gigantic economic advantages and permanent residence in the mini-millionaire's paradise, Leisureland.
The prospect of getting rich brings Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) into the programme. This childless couple in their forties, with a boring job and an uncosy flat, can't see any better prospects in life anyway. After an entrance interview, the necessary preparations follow (all body hair and fillings must be removed), and then it's anaesthesia and the miniaturisation itself.
When a ten-centimetre Paul wakes up "on the other side", he finds out that Audrey backed out at the last minute. Fortunately, the rich but abandoned Paul isn't left to grieve for long thanks to his new "friends", Serbian playboy Dušan (Christoph Waltz) and a one-legged Vietnamese dissident (Hong Chau). With them, he experiences more in a few weeks than in his entire life so far and realises that even in a small world, you can experience big things.
