Excalibur - Blu-ray
The legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table received its most impressive rendition in Excalibur, a film by visionary director John Boorman (Deliverance, Hope and Glory).
All the elements of Sir Thomas Malory's classic story Le Morte Darthur are present: Arthur (Nigel Terry), who managed to pull the sword Excalibur from the stone, the emergence and tragic decline of the noble community of the Round Table, the heroic attempt to find the Holy Grail, and the shifting balance of power between the cunning wizard Merlin (Nicol Williamson) and the evil sorceress Morgana (Helen Mirren).
Featuring Patrick Stewart, Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson, who make their first major appearance here, Excalibur offers, in the words of Pauline Kael in The New Yorker: "One juicy, breathtaking scene after another. ”
