The second book featuring Tomáš Volf, for which Jiří Březina received the Jiří Marek Award for the best detective novel.
A supernatural phenomenon, a strange coincidence, or a sophisticated attempt to destroy evidence? It's a case that has even an experienced fire investigator scratching his head. Finding the answers will certainly not be easy. Lieutenant Tomáš Volf hasn't exactly fit in with his new colleagues at his new post in Prague, so he's essentially on his own for this complex investigation. Will revisiting a closed case that started with a similarly gruesome discovery of a burnt human body help him? But he might just stumble upon something that will change the lives of several people.
A native of České Budějovice, he is one of the most prominent Czech detective story writers. He won the Jiří Marek Award for the best Czech detective novel back in 2014 for his debut, *Na kopci* (On the Hill). The book was re-released in a revised edition ten years later. Březina repeated his success in 2020 with *Vzplanutí* (After the Fire) from his detective series featuring policeman Tomáš Volf, which also includes the books *Promlčení* (No Statute of Limitations), *Polednice* (The Midday Witch), *Mizení* (Vanishing), and *Nalezení* (Found). He is also the author of a children's story, *Noční slunce* (The Night Sun), and the book *Labuť a lovec* (The Swan and the Hunter), in which he combines his love for prehistory, myths, and nature. Jurors, reviewers, and readers alike praise Jiří Březina for his original plots, authentic storytelling, and skilful play on readers' expectations, which often leads to unexpected twists. His books have also been translated into Polish. He prefers to spend his free time in nature, where he walks, runs, camps, or cycles.
