Stiflingly stuffy. That’s the best way to describe the atmosphere at an isolated girls' boarding school when a man suddenly appears. The only man for miles around.
Outside the walls of the isolated girls' school, the American Civil War rages on, but the students and teachers pay the conflict no mind. That is, until it knocks on their door. They take in the badly wounded enemy officer, John McBurney (Colin Farrell), in an act of Christian charity, planning to hand him over to “their” soldiers as a prisoner of war as soon as he’s back on his feet.
However, John gradually wraps not only the young students, led by the beautiful Alicia (Elle Fanning), around his little finger, but also their spinster teacher Edwina (Kirsten Dunst), and above all, the school's headmistress (Nicole Kidman). He awakens emotions in all of them that they have either never experienced or haven't in a very long time. This makes them all the more destructive and dangerous, as John doesn't realise he has found himself in the middle of a battle far more terrifying than any fight in the ongoing war.
