Heartbreakers

Josef Veselka's novel Srdcaři

Try to imagine that you are in the operating room and you are standing over a sick person whose heart you are about to operate on. What would be running through your mind at that moment? Would you think more about the patient, yourself, or perhaps someone you love? Would you be afraid? Maybe there's someone sitting at the door waiting for your every mistake, and maybe it's your ex-boyfriend. Doctors Burian Kremnicky and Daniel Kryl deal with just such situations. From the mid-1960s onwards, we follow the intertwining of their careers and personal lives, and against the backdrop of a changing society, we experience with them great successes, but also moments when their own destiny is out of their hands...
