The Austria nobody was meant to see
This provocative film-essay from influential Austrian director Ulrich Seidl is a stylised look into the private lives of several Austrians who indulge their bizarre needs, hobbies, passions and obsessions inside their meticulously maintained cellars.
Precisely composed, symmetrical shots juxtapose cheap male jokes with expensive furniture, brass band music with opera arias, whips with dolls, sexuality with sadism, and Nazi relics with fitness.
Through his signature “living pictures”, Seidl explores the underworld of the Austrian soul.
