Jan Cimbura and his good friend Josef Piksa are returning from many years of military service. Cimbura accepts service with Kovanda, a peasant, where he meets Marjánka. The maiden can keep her eyes on him and even Jan likes Marjánka, but he does not want to get married yet. Piksa, who farms on his own, asks Marjánka to marry him and she agrees. Years pass and the couple have three children together. However, Piksa gets severe pneumonia and on his deathbed begs his good old friend to take care of his wife and children. Will Cimbura accept this commitment?
