We are proud to present the Czech premiere of R. E. Howard's novella, which was serialised in the legendary magazine Weird Tales in the last three months of 1929. The author presents himself in a different light than most local readers know him, namely as the creator of the fantasy stories about Conan. Here, we are transported to the fog-shrouded East London of the 1920s, into a ghostly opium den and into the clutches of mysterious, exotic characters weaving devilish plans against the world as it was then known.

Among other things, Howard builds on the legacy of Sax Rohmer and his Dr. Fu-Manchu, in a work that bears all the hallmarks of thrilling and terrifying 'shudder pulps' with a typical megalomaniacal genius, a physically capable hero without fear or fault, a beautiful girl in the snares of darkness, and both sharp-witted and helpless guardians of the law.
