When he was ten years old, his mother became a victim of rape and murder (the perpetrator was never discovered), which had a double impact on the boy's fate: and then he started writing mystery novels. At the same time, he himself led such an adventurous life that he was able to draw fully on his own experiences in his work. He was expelled from high school for promoting anti-Semitism and Nazism, then had a brief flirtation with the army, and his addiction to alcohol and drugs led him into the ranks of criminals and the homeless. After his release from prison, he decided to turn over a new leaf, quit drinking, got a job and, most importantly, started writing. In 1991, he married and moved to Kansas City - returning to his hometown after his divorce fifteen years later.
