In 1959, Carroll Shelby ( Matt Damon ) is at an absolute peak, winning the world' s toughest 24 Hours of Le Mans. After the greatest triumph of this intrepid Texasan, a crushing blow comes - a heart defect discovered by doctors will prevent him from continuing the race.
Shelby thus begins a new career as a very inventive designer. He collaborates with a team that includes an excellent test driver and British champion Ken Miles ( Christian Bale ). Miles is not only a top racer dedicated to his family, but he is also unbearably arrogant and completely incapable of any compromise.
And it is this team of car lunatics who will hire Henry Ford II to design and build the perfect race car for his carmaker. Ford has decided to take revenge on Enzo Ferrari for finally refusing to agree his car dealership with Ford Motor Company.
Ferrari cars have been winning the Le Mans circuit continuously from 1960 until 1965. Shelby, Miles and their small team are determined to put a big end to it with the help of the Ford GT40. Against them are the invincible Ferraris, the laws of physics and their own personal demons.
