Legends and legends of old Sumava

Šumava of mysteries and secrets

The hidden places, deep forests, ravines and gorges of Šumava are often shrouded in many mysteries and secrets. A selection of original records of Sumava legends selected, translated and arranged from German by Josef Rauvolf.

Legends and legends complete the image of each region. This is no different in Šumava, whose hidden places, deep forests, gorges and ravines are often shrouded in many mysteries and secrets. The oppressive feelings we still feel in remote places at dusk may have their origin in the eerie silhouettes of trees or the proximity of treacherous swamps. But the rumours do not only evoke touches of vague fear caused by the presence of evil orcs, of alluring water wenches, of a burning man, invisible warriors or shy old witches, They also contain moral lessons warning against greed, greed and avarice. Josef Rauvolf has preserved the atmosphere of ancient times and mystery in his translation of short tales and legends. He found a number of stories in various German-language, mostly turn-of-the-century patriotic magazines.
