“The Russian state wants to destroy the author of this book. Why is the Russian state like that? Start reading Lenin’s and Stalin’s Russia and you will understand much, if not all,” – Aleksandr Mitrofanov, Czech publicist and expert on Russia.
This book is the tenth part of the magnificent project by the well-known Russian prose writer Boris Akunin, The History of the Russian State. Interestingly, Akunin originally became famous for his now legendary detective stories, which take place in the era of Tsarist Russia.
As the author himself has stated, his work is an attempt at an objective rewriting of Russian history, based on the credibility of facts without ideological baggage. His narrative is intended mainly for those who would like to get to know the history of Russia better and in a more accessible form than that which characterises ordinary historical writings.
It is an ambitious attempt to navigate what in Russia's history is a good legacy worthy of being followed and what, on the contrary, needs to be cut off forever. “I write for people who have a poor orientation in Russian history and wish to remedy that. That is why I did not set any concept in advance. This is not the history of the Russian land, but of the Russian state,” says Akunin.
