A short story by the author of the historical fantasy preceding the trilogy of Bivoj the Bestiary. The mythical hero must confront the monster he has awakened from his slumber.
The wild and unkind forest opens its throat of darkness before the three runners. At the head runs Bivoj, strong as a bison in the shoulders. They chase men from another tribe who steal their cattle. When they catch up with them, they kill two of them, the others retreat. But then the ground trembles beneath their feet and an ominous rumbling comes from the bowels of the hill. A monster burrows out of the mound and pounces on the dead cow thief, tearing his muscles, bones, and entrails with his strong teeth. Before Bivoj and his father and cousin retreat, they see that the monster has unwrapped something from the shreds of the leather. In the light of the flames, the men saw a golden bow and a silver arrow the size of a spear. Bivoj knows that he must kill the monster, or else he will attack the settlements along the Meuse, and Libuše learns that the beast has come to life because of them. He must fight not only the monster, but also the magical power of his silver arrow, which always returns to its owner.
