Maigret's first case
Maigret's first case
Today the Commissioner is concerned. Who knows if it would have been kinder to him if Maigret hadn't leaned over at the right moment and muffled the blow? How in the hell did this rookie uncover all that he uncovered?
Every beginning is difficult. The year is 1913 and twenty-six-year-old Maigret has made it to the rank of secretary to the commissioner after four years in the police. But he's not satisfied with his job in the crime lab: he'd like to go upstairs, to Homicide on Goldsmiths Quay! One night when he is on duty, a battered young man arrives at the police station, having overheard a cry for help and a shooting at the mansion of a wealthy family. Maigret sets out on his own to investigate the incident. Little does he know that he is about to open his first case in which he will break the unwritten agreements between the privileged circles and the law enforcement officers.

Georges Simenon
The author of more than 200 novels and 150 short stories, he became one of the most famous francophone writers thanks to the character of Commissaire Maigret. He has been writing since the age of sixteen, when he started as a journalistic elite in his native Belgian city of Liege. He wrote his first book - a humorous novel - at the age of eighteen, then moved to Paris, where for the next ten years he published psychological novels under various pseudonyms. He published his first detective story under his real name in 1930: already in it appears the figure of the charming, polite, though mostly grumpy Parisian, Commissaire Maigret. The last case was solved by his hero in 1972. Simenon's novels have been translated into many languages and dozens of them have been adapted into films.
