This memorial series is one of the most valuable works in the Czech Television archive. It was born by two important television creators - screenwriter Otto Zelenka and director František Filip. Work on the scripts began before the spring of 1968, and viewers saw the series for the first time in the autumn of that year. Affected and humiliated by the events of August and the post-August developments, they found comfort, encouragement and hope in the historical series. In the year of its premiere, the series surprised with its quality, impeccable craftsmanship and a wonderful showcase of acting performances.
Both series were based on Vladimir Neff's Rodová pentalogy:
Marriages of convenience 1957
Imperial Violets 1958
Bad Blood 1959
The Merry Widow 1961
Royal Charioteer 1963
This ambitious project, by the standards of Czech literature, chronicles the lives of two Prague bourgeois families (the Nedobyls and the Born) from the 1850s to the Second World War. It is inspired by the fate of Neff's own family.
The Marriages of Reason series was based on the first two volumes of the novel pentalogy Marriages of Reason and The Emperor's Violets and culminated in the events surrounding the opening of the National Theatre in 1881. As it attracted a great audience response, a seven-part sequel was made seventeen years later based on the novels Bad Blood and The Merry Widow. The plot immediately follows the year 1881 and further develops the dramatic fate of several Prague families in the 1880s and 1890s.
