In the near future, a young translator is offered a lucrative job at a mysterious new ministry that moves "expats" from different historical eras to the present and explores the possibilities of time travel. The protagonist becomes one of the "bridgers" and her job is to take care of Commander Graham Gore, otherwise known as "1847". According to historical records, Commander Gore died during Franklin's doomed expedition to the Arctic - but now he must learn about such bizarre realities as the washing machine, Spotify, feminism and the collapse of the British Empire. His bridge is to live with him, help him adapt and also watch his every move. Over the next year, their initially awkward coexistence begins to develop into something deeper, but at the same time the true nature of the project that brought their lives together comes to light. Can love overcome the obstacles of time and history? And can history be changed?
