Wynn has returned safely to the Learned Brotherhood with her companions – the vampire Chan Andras and the elven she-wolf, Shade. Although she managed to retrieve the confiscated diaries, she only caught a glimpse of the ancient texts written by long-forgotten vampires before they were once again out of her reach. She may pay a high price for even this small success. The hostility from the brotherhood's leadership has intensified. Instead of isolating her, they deliberately assign her a task to keep her out of the way for as long as possible. But Wynn has her own plans. She sets out to find another dwarven fortress: a place called Bäalâle Seatt, which few have ever heard of. It might be the resting place of the spirit ring – one of the five mysterious instruments the Ancient Enemy used in the mythical war of the Forgotten Ages. Whatever caused the fall of Bäalâle, Wynn knows that one mythical figure was involved in some way: the infamous Lord of Massacre.
