Pashmina - DVD

A four-part epic series about pashmina wool and its embargoed variety, shahtoosh, the illegal possession of which is a prisonable offence in Himalayan countries. The series focuses on the endangered Tibetan antelope, which must be killed to obtain the fine and rare fur from its underbelly. The filmmakers follow the entire process of weaving, dyeing and embroidering the expensive shawls. The journey begins in Buddhist Ladakh, where the wool is found, and ends in Islamic Kashmir, where it is processed.

The film mentions the numerous wars fought over the precious wool in the past and describes the difficult trans-Himalayan trade and its arteries: the Himalayan caravan routes. Viewers will travel over high and dangerous passes of the Himalayan ridge and learn much about the courage and resilience of the ancient caravan participants, as well as their customs and religion.
