Queen Constance's Angel
In 1236, Judge Pardus Tvrdišovec arrives in Hodonín at the head of a punitive expedition to investigate who killed the queen's reeve, Petr, and why. Pardus was born in this region, so he knows the nature of the local people, who still believe in the old gods and worship the witches living in the surrounding marshes. Queen Constance has also charged him with ensuring the safety of the new settlers who are to move into the town and its surroundings. The situation escalates when an old Franciscan monk arrives in Hodonín and allies himself with the local fanatical priest…
The novel is inspired by a charter from Queen Constance of Hungary, in which she elevates Hodonín to a royal town, grants it extensive rights, and simultaneously calls for the punishment of her reeve's murderers.
