Runner is the fifth installment in Peter May's series of Chinese thrillers
A top Chinese swimmer commits suicide on the eve of the Olympics - and China loses its hopes of victory against America. An Olympic weightlifter takes his own life in the arms of his Beijing mistress - and the highest circles try to cover up the scandal. But the suicides turn out to be murders and turn out to be linked to other "accidental deaths" of China's best athletes.
Chinese detective Li Jen and American medical examiner Margaret Campbell take the case. Their only hope is an Olympic runner. But she mysteriously disappears and Li's career and the future of international athletics are in serious jeopardy.
