Shadow of the Gods

This is a world of blood, claws and sharp blades, a world of premature and painful death...

Rumours of war spread across the battlefield of Vigrid, where gods died centuries ago, and so glorious jarls and self-proclaimed kings summon their faithful. And while they scramble and hastily make new alliances, they are looking for anything that would strengthen their chances in the coming battles. The bones of dead gods, the magic-soaked blood of the tainted, or the dreaded monsters that rolled out of the Vaesen pit after the fall of Snakes - all of these can give them a significant advantage in the ensuing chaos, and perhaps even a coveted victory in the end.

Meanwhile, the indomitable Orc tracks down the murderers of her husband who have taken her only son, the runaway slave Varg finds himself among the Blood Oaths whose deeds are sung of by skalds around the evening fires, and the home of the brave shieldmaiden Elva becomes a drakkar full of fierce warriors. But a higher power has always ruled the strings of fate, and it has its own plans for the trio of unusual heroes...

The first volume of an award-winning fantasy saga set in a Norse world full of myth, magic and violence.

They wrote about the book

"A masterfully crafted and brutally compelling epic fantasy inspired by Nordic culture."

Anthony Ryan, author of the Shadow of the Raven trilogy

"A series that promises the same level of complexity and depth as Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time or George R. R. Martin."

Library Journal

"The voice of heroic fantasy comes alive again in The Crooked Oath."

Boris Hokr, iLiteratura.cz

"John Gwynne has proved that the songs of the warriors of the Promised Valhalla have lost none of their sonority. He has preserved some elements, while others he has completely overturned and served the result together with mead for a blood feast."

Jiří Kábrt, XB-1

"The author writes brilliantly - and his emotive yet thoughtful storytelling, which blends the language of ancient sagas with the modern, puts The Shadow of the Gods, combined with boundless imagination, in the realm of books that are hard to forget and hard to put down."

Jiří Popiolek, Pevnost

Author's afterword to the book

"I had a lot of fun writing the first part of the Blood Oath Saga. I've been fascinated by Norse mythology and history since time immemorial, and I dedicate this series to them as a love song. When I opened the retelling of Beowulf at the age of nine or ten, I immediately fell for that unique Nordic atmosphere with all its mystery, tragedy and darkly comic view of both gods and men - and of course the pragmatic carnage on an epic scale. This would go some way to explaining why I now participate in Viking battle reenactments and why I enjoy standing with my sons by my side in the shield wall. This book was basically inspired by the epic Beowulf and Ragnarök - the clash at the end of time, when the gods fell and the world was remade."
