The beautiful girl Jana is courted by the son of the court councillor Peter. Jana, however, fell in love with the young clerk Záviš. He also loves the girl, but he is poor and cannot marry. Peter is also his friend. When they talk about their girls, they have no idea that they are both talking about the same one. Petr buys a song for his sweetheart from Záviš, who composes in his spare time. During one meeting Jana quotes the words of this song and Záviš recognises that the girl is Jana. He thinks that Jana loves Peter, so he decides to withdraw. He trades another song for a ticket to America and leaves. Jana eventually marries Peter. After a few years, Záviš arrives in Prague as a famous jazz conductor and meets Jana. They explain everything to each other, but it's too late to make amends.
The film is inspired by the poetic collection Songs of Záviš written by the poet Jan Červenka. It has a patriotic character, Karel Hašler sang one of his most famous songs, On the Old Castle Steps. The film blends several musical styles with guitar, piano and orchestra. The lyrical elements used elevate the film to a beautiful visual poem.
