Smigmator Jan, Mitch Winehouse: Smigmator - GERSHWIN - Winehouse - CD
120th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest figures in the history of popular music, musical theatre, jazz and swing, composer George Gershwin. The Czech swing singer Jan Smigmator and the British swing singer and philanthropist Mitch Winehouse, father of singer Amy Winehouse, have prepared their personal tribute to this musical legend in the form of a joint album.
The music of George Gershwin connects both singers so much that they decided to name the album quite prosaically "Smigmator - GERSHWIN - Winehouse". The launch of this extraordinary international album will take place on the day of Gershwin's birth on 26 September 2018 in Prague at the Malostranská besedě with the participation of both singers and distinguished guests as godparents.
In the distinctive yet stylish arrangements of pianist Vladimír Strnad, accompanied by an international jazz band and string orchestra, both singers will sing not only the most famous Gershwin songs, but also the lesser-known ones. The album will also include songs from the famous Gershwin opera Porgy And Bess, from the film An American In Paris or such evergreens as Embraceable You, Nice Work If You Can Get It, 'S Wonderful, But Not For Me and others. "Together with Donna Byrne, we sang a duet called Let's Call The Whole Thing Off, which was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong on their 1957 album together. As far as duets with Mitch Winehouse are concerned, let's mention for example the song A Foggy Day (In London Town) telling about Mitch's hometown, where the fog is supposedly long gone," says Jan Smigmator.
Jan Smigmator invited not only the stars of the Czech jazz scene, but also several rare foreign guests to record the album. The invitation was accepted by the legendary American tenorsaxophonist Scott Hamilton, Slovak trumpet legend Juraj Bartos, American jazz singer Donna Byrne, double bassist Vincenc Kummer, drummers Josef Vejvoda, Branko Križek, Vaico Deczi and Israeli jazz star Utsi Zimrink.
A unique album also requires a unique booklet, which is why Jan Smigmator asked the academic painter Oldřich Jelínek and the graphic artist and designer Tereza Melenová to design the album.
