Square - DVD
Cristian is the curator of a prestigious modern art museum that is preparing a daring conceptual exhibition. Its central idea is a 4×4 metre square. Inside it, a rule of absolute equality and tolerance applies. Together with a PR agency, the museum is looking for the ideal strategy to promote the event in a media space that's distracted and overwhelmed with events. But then Cristian loses his wallet and mobile phone in a bizarre pickpocketing incident, and one of his subordinates comes up with a brilliant way to get them back. As usual, Cristian is unable to focus on anything other than himself. And, much like Swedish society as a whole, the conceptual exhibition begins to drown in a bizarre confusion defined by the tension between liberal values, egoism and selfishness. Welcome to the square called modern-day Europe.
In his "conceptual tragicomedy", which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2017, Swedish director Ruben Östlund explores one egoistic character and the condescending hypocrisy of contemporary Western societies.
