Step by step

Beth has never stuck at anything.

She's quit more jobs and relationships than she can remember, and she still lives in her childhood bedroom. It’s not that she hasn't tried to grow up. It's just that so far, the only commitment she's managed to keep is her Friday-night session at the village pub. But in a single morning, her life is about to change.

Beth is now looking after her teenage niece and three-year-old nephew, surrounded by an unfamiliar world of bedtime stories, parents' evenings and cuddly elephants. She's never been responsible for anyone—or anything—before, so it isn't long before she feels completely out of her depth.

What if she just can't do it?

With a little help from her best friend Jory (their relationship is strictly platonic, of course…) and her lovely, lonely neighbour Albert, Beth decides it's time to not give up. It’s time to take one small step at a time.

This is a story about finding strength you never knew you had, and magic in places you never saw it before.
