In April 2014, the terrorist group Boko Haram attacked the village of Chibok in north-eastern Nigeria and abducted 276 girls from a local boarding school. News of this act quickly spread around the world. Celebrities such as Michelle Obama and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousufzai have also expressed their support under the hastag "Bring Back Our Girls".
But the Chibok girls are not the only case. Thousands of women are currently in the hands of Islamists. Wolfgang Bauer, a leading German reporter writing for Die Zeit, went to Nigeria in July 2015. He spoke to girls who had managed to escape from Boko Haram captivity. About their kidnapping, about the cruel experience of captivity, but also about a better future.
The book presents the stories of the kidnapped women and a detailed description of the workings of the terrorist organization Boko Haram. It describes the historical and political background of terror and shows how it has destroyed the ethnic and cultural balance in one of the most diverse regions of the world. But it is also a confession of the kidnapped girls. A heartbreaking confession that tells of suffering and violence, but also of courage. And about hope.
